Daffodils

Daffodil is a pretty little thing
It comes up so early every spring
It’s a pretty little thing and that’s all
Getting killed off every year in the frost

She’s a pretty little thing
About 17 or so. She wasn’t nothing but skin and bones
She’s a pretty little thing and that’s all
Like a daffodil out in the frost

The Devil There Too

I knew a woman who had a smile like a loaded gun
She moved from room to room like she’s on the run
Lived her life like she had something to prove
Could never ever sit still was always on to something new

And I say, ooh, what are you going to do

When all that trouble’s taken root?
It doesn’t none the good things that she done
How far away she try and run ’cause there’s a devil there

There’s a devil there, too.

I knew a woman who had a house that she couldn’t call home
Was sad from too many years of sleeping alone
Rather had a love like a candle been taken away
She had a heart that would bleed most every day

And I say what are you gonna do

When a hand like that has been dealt to you?

When her love he got taken away

So she spend most everyday with a devil there
There’s a devils there, too.

I knew a woman with the way like a falling snow

Everything was just so pure anywhere she go

She went away to find a man to plant a garden with

She looked like a wilted flower when she did

I say, ooh, what are you gonna do?
When all that green gets tinted in a shade of blue
When the mud mixes with the snow
Where did that lost halo go?
There’s a devils there, too
There’s a devil there, too.

Here

The Moon, she hangs like a bloody hangnail
On a fist up above the earth
I heard it coming with the rocks, they were rambling
I picked my head up out of the dirt
It’s time to get up and run from the reckoning coming
An ill-wind blowing toward my home
And I will greet it on my front porch.
I will see it, then I’ll be singing

I’m still here

Remember that time when we went all in?
We were happy to let those dice roll
All those cool mountain pools that we dove into
They just blinked then they let us go
And we were left adrift just blissfully ignorant
of all the trouble that we’d set up for ourselves
All the plans we made
the people we changed
and the dreams we left for dead

I’m still here

So hike up your skirt
Roll up your sleeves
Wade out into the muck with me
‘Cause there’s a horizon I’ve been fighting
and a notion I’ve been rolling
over and over in my head
Says if you ain’t willing, darling
If you ain’t still trying
If you ain’t still dreaming we’re already dead

I’m still here.

Sirens

Well, the road gets blocked over the ridge at the top
from the snow and the ice in the rain
And the water’s coming up but it doesn’t matter none
’cause this one isn’t getting away
The dull and the quiet has turned so sharp and silent now.
I’m straining my ears I’m listening for the slightest of sounds

Because I heard it once it was just a song on the wind
And I’ve been chasing it around ever since then
I heard it once it was just a song on the wind
And I’ve been chasing it around ever since then
Here I go again

See, I’ve been following so long that siren song
and the only road I know back home
Whenever it disappears the only thing that I can hear
are whispers of it on the wind blowing
I used to go to work every day just praying for something more
Now, I’m that old cliche warning careful what you’re wishing for

‘Cause I heard it once it was just a song on the wind
And I’ve been chasing it around ever since then
I heard it once it was just a song on the wind
And I’ve been chasing it around ever since then
Here I go again

I went out on the freeway in the early morning
when all the world was still blue
And the ache in my head slacked off a little bit
as I watched the failing of the moon
‘Cause the sun was still abed
but the clouds up overhead
They were lighting off like they were on fire
And I watch them burning
with the lessons I’ve been learning
from the offerings we made to the meantime

Yeah, I heard it once it was just a song on the wind
And I’ve been chasing it around ever since then
I heard it once it was just a song on the wind
And I’ve been chasing it around ever since then
I heard it once it was just a song on the wind
And I’ve been chasing it around ever since then
Here I go again
